In line with its objective to conclude its Voluntary Partnership Agreement negotiations with the EU before the end of 2016, Vietnam is intensifying efforts and making further progress in developing its national legality verification system.
For example, the government, civil society and the private sector have just agreed to establish a sort of « due diligence » system for all timber and timber product imports and trade on its domestic market.
Among the 70 countries that export timber and timber products to Vietnam, one of the main ones – Cameroon – will therefore have to comply with this new requirement.
Pending the first FLEGT licenses, Cameroonian exporters will therefore have to provide their Vietnamese partners with all of the documents necessary to enable them to demonstrate the legality of their imports.
