From Forest to Data: forest growers research partners with our member DEEPLAI implementing log ID across New Zealand

Forest Growers Research Ltd (FGR) is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Polish software company DEEPLAI to advance log marking technology for the New Zealand forest industry.

DEEPLAI, based in Lublin, Poland, specialises in developing AI-driven software solutions. Dcode is the proprietary log marking system which assigns unique identifiers to logs, enabling tamper-proof tracking using real-time geolocation and timestamps. The technology offers seamless integration with forestry operations, supporting provenance authentication and geospatial traceability across the entire wood supply chain.

This partnership aligns with FGR’s commitment to fostering innovation and research leadership in New Zealand forestry.

At present the only individual log ID system used successfully in New Zealand is the paper tag imprinted with a barcode or QR code for export logs. This currently requires manual attachment to logs by metal staples and consequently, is subject to removal or loss. Through the Automated Log Identification Project, led by FGR Harvesting Programme Manager Keith Raymond, the aim is to deliver a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and fully automated log tracking system.

Ultimately Log ID will be applied across New Zealand timber harvesting operations, leading to a database management system to store the log ID and associated data related to the log characteristics, allowing the supply chain stakeholders to maintain traceability transparency.

DEEPLAI’s vision for AI-powered workflow automation complements FGR’s goals of digital transformation in forestry. Company founders Swapan Chaudhuri (CEO) and Andrzej Saja (CTO) bring extensive expertise in business and software development to the initiative.

FGR looks forward to a successful deployment of this cutting-edge solution to benefit the entire forestry value chain.
