ATIBT was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jean-Jacques Landrot on October 31, 2026. As the association’s former executive director and president, he devoted a significant portion of his professional career to the development of the tropical forestry and timber sector and the promotion of its sustainable management.
An experienced professional in the forestry sector, Jean-Jacques Landrot played a key role in the evolution of ATIBT beginning in the 1990s. After holding leadership positions within the association, he served as its president in the early 2000s, guiding the sector through a period of major transformation.
His commitment was particularly evident in his promotion of sustainable tropical forest management as early as the 1990s with the first forest inventories, the improvement of logging practices, and the fostering of dialogue among forestry companies, government authorities, international organizations, and other stakeholders.
Drawing on his field experience in Africa, he advocated for an approach that balanced the economic realities of companies, the preservation of forest resources, and the social issues related to their exploitation. He thus contributed to the discussions and exchanges that accompanied the development of responsible forest management and certification in the Congo Basin.
After stepping down from his position, Jean-Jacques continued to follow developments in the sector and ATIBT’s activities with interest, maintaining regular contact with the team until his final days. His loyalty to the Association, his energy, his warm personality, his willingness to help, and his ability to listen are a testament to his deep attachment to ATIBT and the personal bonds he had forged there.
ATIBT wishes to honor his contribution to the Association’s history and his commitment to the sustainable management of tropical forests.
ATIBT extends its deepest condolences to his children, family, and loved ones and offers them its heartfelt sympathy during this difficult time.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 13, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Church, located at 90 rue de l’Assomption, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
In accordance with his wishes, the ceremony will be followed by a reception.
