Three recent publications from the WOOD for GLOBE program of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) highlight the strategic role of sustainable wood in climate and transition policies. Their findings directly inform European debates on regulation and market access for legal and sustainable tropical wood.
Three publications highlighted by IUFRO in this context provide key elements for the debate.
The first provides a global overview of sustainable wood policies, identifying the levers and obstacles to the implementation of coherent frameworks, as well as the conditions necessary to strengthen the adoption of sustainable wood-based solutions.

The second analyzes forest bioeconomy policies and networks in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighting lessons that can be applied to tropical regions: sector structuring, governance, biodiversity integration, and local socio-economic benefits.
The third publication highlights the contribution of wood products to climate change mitigation, particularly through carbon storage in wood products, substitution effects in relation to more emissive materials, and the integration of these benefits into climate policies.

For European markets, this work highlights the importance of assessing legal, traceable tropical wood from sustainably managed forests on the basis of objective and scientific criteria. It reminds us that responsible access to these markets is an essential lever for maintaining forest cover, supporting local economies, and achieving European climate objectives.
