Launch of a Call for Proposals for a Study on China’s Domestic Tropical Timber Market

24.04.2026

China, the world’s leading importer of tropical timber, is currently experiencing profound changes in its domestic market.

In this context, ATIBT is launching a new study under the Tropical Timber Trade Facility (TTT) project to better understand the perception and uses of tropical timber products in the Chinese domestic market.

A market in transition

Several structural dynamics are currently reshaping demand for tropical timber in China. The slowdown in the real estate sector since 2021 has led to a significant decline in demand for interior wood products such as flooring, furniture and decorative elements. At the same time, preferences are evolving: younger generations are increasingly turning to temperate species such as oak and ash, at the expense of the traditionally dominant red tropical hardwoods.

A targeted qualitative approach

The study focuses exclusively on the Chinese domestic market and on processed tropical timber products used in interior applications. It is based on a targeted literature review, complemented by an in-depth qualitative analysis drawing on semi-structured interviews conducted in Mandarin.

Between 14 and 18 interviews will be conducted with key market players, including importers and professional buyers such as interior designers and property developers. The objective is to better understand their selection criteria, preferences, as well as the constraints and barriers influencing the positioning of tropical timber.

Results to inform strategy

Beyond the diagnostic phase, the study aims to produce operational recommendations. Which species remain competitive? For which uses? Through which distribution channels? And how can African timber supply be better aligned with the expectations of Chinese stakeholders?

By shedding light on decision-making processes and market perceptions, this work will help support producers in adapting their strategies to a changing environment, where traditional market dynamics are being reshaped.
