19.08.2026

It is with deep sadness that we, at ATIBT have learned of the passing of Peter Latham OBE following a short illness. A former Director of ATIBT and a highly respected figure in the international timber sector, Peter Latham will be remembered as a visionary leader who was deeply committed to sustainable development, responsible forest management, and the promotion of sustainable timber trade.

Peter joined James Latham PLC in 1973 as the seventh generation of his family to enter the business. Over a distinguished 44-year career, including eleven years as Chairman (2006–2017), he led a period of significant transformation, driving the company's modernisation, expanding its activities into panel products and specialist materials, and embedding sustainability at the heart of its strategy.

His influence extended far beyond James Latham. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his outstanding services to the UK timber industry.

Peter devoted a considerable part of his career to serving the wider forestry and timber community. He held several prominent positions, including Chairman of PEFC, Director of ATIBT, and Trustee of the Commonwealth Forestry Association, playing an active role in strengthening international cooperation and promoting sustainable forest management.

In 2018, his remarkable contribution to the sector was recognised with the Timber Trade Journal Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his long-standing leadership in timber distribution and environmental stewardship.

From 2019 to 2025, Peter also served as Non-Executive Forestry Commissioner in England, providing strategic oversight on forestry policy, sustainability, and land management.

Respected for his professionalism, integrity, and forward-looking vision, Peter Latham was widely admired throughout the timber community. His unwavering commitment to a responsible and sustainable timber industry has left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

On behalf of the entire ATIBT team, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at James Latham PLC. He will be greatly missed, and his contribution to the international timber sector will not be forgotten.
