Fair&Precious turns 10: "Tropical timber — let's separate fact from fiction"

29.05.2026

Fair&Precious returns to the Carrefour this edition with an ambitious event— a live debate designed to dismantle, one by one, the misconceptions that still define the public image of tropical timber.

When Fair&Precious was launched ten years ago, the goal was straightforward: to change the conversation about tropical timber by making the evidence visible, the commitments real, and the benefits tangible. A decade on, the initiative has become the collective reference for sustainable tropical forest management and certified timber promotion — and the questions it set out to answer remain as relevant as ever.

On Wednesday 3 June, from 15:00 to 16:30 in Canopée 2, ATIBT celebrates this anniversary not with self-congratulation, but with a debate that takes the most enduring misconceptions about tropical timber head-on. Five speakers, five received ideas, each addressed directly with facts, field experience and market data.

"Tropical forestry destroys biodiversity" — challenged by Lucas Millet (PAFC Bassin du Congo), with data on sustainable management and conservation outcomes in producing forests.

"Forest exploitation does not benefit local communities" — answered by Edwige Eyang Effa, Fair&Precious Ambassador from Gabon, with direct testimony from producing countries.

"Tropical timber is often illegal" — addressed by Stéphane Glannaz (Forest Pact), on traceability, regulation and evolving international market requirements.

"Labels cannot be trusted" — examined by Aurélien Sautière (FSC France), on certification, auditing and chain of custody systems.

"It is better to use local timber than tropical timber" — explored by Tullia Baldassari (Interholco), on performance, usage and material complementarity.

The debate is animated by Benoît Jobbe Duval (Director General, ATIBT), followed by a moderated roundtable across all speakers and an open Q&A with the audience. The session closes at 16:25, followed by the Fair&Precious Cocktail from 16:30 to 17:30 — open to all participants, professionals and curious visitors alike.
