Can a logged forest still be a forest? This is the question addressed by ATIBT's new brochure on the sustainable forest management model in the Congo Basin.
Behind every tree harvested in a sustainably managed concession lies years of careful work: forest inventories, decades-long planning, strict harvesting rules, ongoing ecological monitoring and independent audits. The brochure highlights these mechanisms, which make it possible to reconcile timber production with forest cover preservation, biodiversity protection and territorial development, notably through management plans that organise forest areas into production, conservation and community-use zones.
It also looks at the role of forest certification (FSC and PAFC/PEFC), which provides independent verification of on-the-ground practices and guarantees timber traceability through to the final product.
Through key data and accessible illustrations, this publication sheds light on what, beyond appearances, makes all the difference in sustainable tropical forest management.
This brochure was produced as part of the TTT project.
