The Forest Stewardship Council is a global organization dedicated to promoting responsible forest management around the world.
With over 30 years of experience in responsible forest management, FSC uses its expertise to promote its actions internationally, bringing together experts from the environmental, social, and economic spheres.
Mission:
FSC's mission is to promote responsible management of the world's forests, meaning management that is ecologically appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable, enabling the fulfillment of the needs and wants of present and future generations.
Ecologically appropriate forest management ensures that the harvesting of wood and non-wood products limits the impact on forest biodiversity, productivity, and ecosystem functionality.
Socially beneficial forest management ensures compliance with the recommendations of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on labor rights, safeguards the recreational and landscape functions of forests, creates and develops dialogue between foresters and local communities, and preserves the rights and customs of indigenous peoples.
Economically viable forest management means that forestry operations are structured and managed in a way that is economically viable so that forests remain sufficiently economically attractive and are not replaced by other forms of production, particularly agriculture.
